چکیده

Abstract A generally anisotropic elasticity tensor, which might be obtained from physical measurements, can be approximated by a tensor belonging to a particular material-symmetry class; we refer to such a tensor as the effective tensor. The effective tensor is the closest to the generally anisotropic tensor among the tensors of that symmetry class. The concept of closeness is formalized in the notion of norm. Herein, we compare the effective tensors belonging to the transversely isotropic class and obtained using two different norms: the Frobenius norm and the L2 operator norm. We compare distributions of the effective elasticity parameters and symmetry-axis orientations for both the error-free case and the case of the generally anisotropic tensor subject to errors.

Effects of norms on general Hookean solids for their isotropic counterparts

It is common to assume that a Hookean solid is isotropic. For a generally anisotropic elasticity tensor, it is possible to obtain its isotropic counterparts. Such a counterpart is obtained in accordance with a given norm. Herein, we examine the effect of three norms: the Frobenius 36-component norm, the Frobenius 21-component norm and the operator norm on a general Hookean solid. We find that b...

The isotropic material closest to a given anisotropic material

The isotropic elastic moduli closest to a given anisotropic elasticity tensor are defined using three definitions of elastic distance, the standard Frobenius (Euclidean) norm, the Riemannian distance for tensors, and the log-Euclidean norm. The closest moduli are unique for the Riemannian and the log-Euclidean norms, independent of whether the difference in stiffness or compliance is considered...

Nematic polymer mechanics : flow - induced anisotropy

In this paper, we model and compute flow-induced mechanical properties of nematic polymer nanocomposites, consisting of transversely isotropic rigid spheroids in an isotropic matrix. Our goal is to fill a gap in the theoretical literature between random and perfectly aligned spheroidal composites (Odegard et al. in Compos. Sci. Technol. 63, 1671–1687, 2003; Gusev et al. in Adv. Eng. Mater. 4(12...

A stochastic model for elasticity tensors exhibiting uncertainties on material symmetries

This study addresses the stochastic modeling of media whose elasticity tensor exhibits uncertainties on the material symmetry class to which it belongs. More specifically, we focus on the construction of a probabilistic model which allows realizations of random elasticity tensors to be simulated, under the constraint that the mean distance (in a sense to be defined) to a given class of material...

A Potential Method for Body and Surface Wave Propagation in Transversely Isotropic Half- and Full-Spaces

The problem of propagation of plane wave including body and surface waves propagating in a transversely isotropic half-space with a depth-wise axis of material symmetry is investigated in details. Using the advantage of representation of displacement fields in terms of two complete scalar potential functions, the coupled equations of motion are uncoupled and reduced to two independent equations...
